What are the requirements to become a coach?

There are no strict education requirements for starting a coaching career. Depending on where you live, you may not even be required to be certified or licensed to begin coaching.

However, successful coaches realise that a well-rounded education is imperative for a booming professional career. Aspiring coaches can choose several different paths when starting a career as a professional coach. There are numerous coaching certificate programs, for instance.  Professional coaches may also have, or choose to earn, degrees in areas such as counselling, psychology, or organisational development.

Finally, you may wish to consider getting credentialed.  Depending on your target organisation or specific clientele, acquiring a coaching credential may be required or highly recommended.  In addition, credentials help expand the credibility of the profession around the world. Studies show that obtaining a professional coaching credential demonstrates high professional standards, commitment to a robust code of ethics, and high knowledge and skill level. It also reinforces the integrity of the coaching profession nationally and internationally.

“Coaching is about relationships. It’s more than a conversation. The relationship between a coach and a coachee is a partnership where we are co-creating possibilities — different solutions and outcomes that perhaps the coachee wouldn’t necessarily come up with on their own.”

Become a Life Coach

Life coaching draws upon various tools and techniques from other disciplines such as sociology, psychology, Neuroscience, positive adult development, and career counselling with an aim towards helping people identify and achieve personal goals. Speciality life coaches may have degrees and may have studied psychological counselling, hypnosis, dream analysis, divination, marketing, Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Affirmations, Auditing and other areas relevant to providing guidance.

However, life coaches are not necessarily therapists, consultants, sports instructors or health care providers, and psychological intervention and business analysis may lie outside the scope of some coaches’ work. If you want to become a life coach, let’s get in touch today!
